An oversized scarf is one of the most useful things you can own. It is longer and narrower than a shawl, which means it wraps, loops and layers in more ways than you might expect.

1. The simple drape

Hang it around your neck and let both ends fall straight down the front. Easy, relaxed, and it shows off the whole length of the colour work.

2. The single loop

Wrap one end once around your neck and let both ends hang at different lengths. This is the everyday classic over a coat.

3. The double loop

Wrap the scarf twice around your neck so it sits close and warm, and tuck the ends in or leave them loose. Best on properly cold days.

4. The shoulder wrap

Open the scarf out and wear it across your shoulders like a narrow shawl. It works beautifully over a summer dress on a cool evening.

5. The belted layer

Drape it long over a jumper or dress and wear a thin belt over it at the waist. It turns the scarf into part of the outfit rather than an extra.
